7 Tips For Painting Your Metal Fence in Jefferson Town, KY

Painting a metal fence is not as easy as other painting jobs, especially if you have no idea how to do it right.

You’ll have to strip all of its paint, remove all the dust, and sand it before you start applying your primer and your new paint.

So before you start painting your metal fence, it’s always good to know some tips on how to do it properly.

With that in mind, here are 7 tips for painting a metal fence in Jefferson Town, KY.

1. Remove All of Its Rust

To make sure that your primer and paint will be absorbed by your metal fence, you have to remove all of its rust first.

First, check if your metal fence has any rust on its surface, then remove it before you start applying your primer or your new paint.

Don’t forget to wear your safety gloves, safety glasses, and facemask before you start removing the rust.

Consider using a steel brush, steel wool, or high-grit sandpaper to remove all of its rust effectively.

2. Sand Its Surface

When you’re done removing all of the rust from its surface, you’ll now have to sand it as smooth as possible.

For sanding, you can use lighter grain sandpaper to sand the rougher areas of your metal fence.

Sanding may consume a lot of your time, but you have to do it if you’re looking to get the best possible results.

3. Wash It Properly

After removing the rust and sanding the surface until it’s smooth, you’ll now have to wash the metal fence using mineral spirits.

Washing your metal fence using mineral spirits can remove any rust residue on its surface.

Use a rug or a scrubbing brush to clean the metal fence while you’re washing and don’t forget to let it dry totally.

After washing the metal fence, allow it to dry totally before you apply the primer or the new paint.

4. Rinse It With Plain Water

After washing your metal fence with mineral spirits and allowing it to dry completely, rinse it with plain water to get rid of any residue from the mineral spirits.

You have to do this since mineral spirits can make your metal fence not to absorb the primer or the new paint properly.

5. Make Sure To Apply A Primer

Once your metal fence is completely dry, make sure to apply a primer before you start painting it.

You should also use a good metal primer which you can find in your local hardware.

Apply a first coat of the metal primer to its surface so that the new paint will adhere well and will have long-lasting results.

Once you’re done, wait for one to two days to make sure that it’s totally dry before you apply your new paint.

6. Apply Your New Paint

When painting your metal fence, make sure that you’re using the right paint.

There are many different types of paint — paints made for metal, wood, plastic, etc.

Dip your paintbrush into the new paint and start painting across the surface of your metal fence.

Apply your new paint the same way you apply your metal primer.

Just make sure to let the first coat dry totally before you apply the second coat.

7. Apply A Sealant

Your metal fence is always exposed to different types of elements, so it’s always a good idea to apply a sealant to maintain its fresh look.

The same with your primer and your new paint, there is also a sealant that’s made for metals.

Make sure to read the instructions of the product so that you’ll know when to apply the sealant after you apply your new paint.
