Even the most pedantic cleaning freak sometimes overlooks the wallpaper. It is extremely easy to forget, and sometimes you only think about it during spring cleaning or when a child has stained it with crayons in a bout of creativity.

 

Wallpaper attracts dust and dirt magically, so occasional cleaning cannot hurt. Depending on how your wallpaper is, you may only need to dust it off, but you may also need to remove stains.

 

Fortunately, it’s relatively easy. With the right tools, a little persistence and a bit of muscle mass, your wallpaper will soon look like new again.

Find Out the Type of Wallpaper You Have

 

Vinyl wallpaper is not difficult to clean. Coated fabric wallpapers sometimes have a protective layer of acrylic or vinyl, which is also easy to wash off.

Simple paper wallpapers should preferably not get wet – you should only treat stains if possible.

You can scrub vinyl wallpaper, but you shouldn’t use abrasive methods to clean it. 

For example, don’t use a sponge that is too rough.

Wallpaper without a protective coating should only be cleaned with a dry sponge. 

Do not apply moisture to the wallpaper, just gently dry it.

 

Washing the Wallpaper.

 

Put a small amount of cleaning liquid, about two tablespoons, in a small bucket of warm water. 

It’s best to use clear cleaning liquid soap so that you don’t discolor the wallpaper. 

Dip a soft cloth or sponge into the rinsing water and wring it out over the bucket.

Try the cleaning solution by dabbing a small, inconspicuous area on the wall.

If the wallpaper does not damage, you can start cleaning. 

Wipe the wallpaper from top to bottom and always clean them in the direction of the adhesive seams, one line at a time.

 

Don’t use too much detergent. Otherwise, you would stick the dirt to the wallpaper.

The rough side of sponges is usually too rough for most wallpapers.

 

Rinse Off The Wallpaper And Dry It.

 

Now you need the second bucket. Use the water from this bucket and a fresh cloth and rinse with clear water lane by lane. 

Don’t use too much water; you don’t want to soak the wallpaper. 

Take a terry towel at hand and then dry the wallpaper immediately so that it doesn’t soak too much and loosen at the end.

 

Dusting Your Wallpaper

 

Vacuuming 

 

If you want to dust your wallpaper, the best way to do it is with a vacuum cleaner.

Put a specialized wall attachment on the hose before you start. 

Depending on the length of the hose, you may need a ladder to reach the top of your wall. 

You should be careful not to scratch your walls. Start at the top and work your way room by room along the wall until you’ve thoroughly cleaned it.

As long as you don’t exert too much pressure on the wallpaper, you can also vacuum fabric wallpaper with the vacuum cleaner.

 

Dusting With a Broom.

 

Find a soft cloth, preferably made of microfiber, and wrap it around the broom. 

Then sweep the broom from left to right across the wallpaper. 

With this method, you can also get into dusty corners. Work your way up from the top.
